The Riverina regional relay broadcasting
station, 2CO, Corowa, was officially opened on Wednesday evening. As it is three times stronger than
any other station m Australia, thousands of enthusiasts tuned in to 2CO,
which also has the highest wave length in the Commonwealth, 538 metres
(frequency 56 kilocycles). The programme, which was also relayed
to 3AR, Melbourne, and 2FC, Sydney, was broadcast from the Literary Institute
at Corowa. Mr. Stewart Doyle, chairman of
directors of the Australian Broadcasting Co., and Mr. H. P. Brown,
director of postal services, spoke and officially opened, the station,
after which the musical programme, which included numbers by Mr. W. T.
Sanders, and Miss Lois Hingston, both of
Albury, was proceeded with. Mr. J W. Kitto, Deputy Director
of Postal Services for New South Wales, accompanied Mr. Brown. The programme of musical items ended
at 10 o'clock, after which a 20 minutes session of recorded music
was broadcast from the Albury studio at the post office. Mr. Frank Hatherly, the
well-known. Melbourne announcer, and conductor of community singing, was
in charge at Corowa, and Mr. Arthur J. Newnham at Albury.
