The term
“County” is Merely a Convenient Term The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser October

The Government Order, No. 50, published in our front page, specifies
the boundaries within which settlers will for the present be permitted to
select land, and enumerates the nineteen Counties into which the territory
within those boundaries has been divided. Many of these Counties are, very properly, named after our successive
Governors. We understand that Port Macquarie when thrown open, will be erected
into a County, and be called after Governor Macquarie. It will be observed, that the word "County" is still used merely as a convenient term of
distinction, a legal sense not having yet been given to it. |
