Tumut, Tuesday. A monster meeting was held at the Oddfellows' Hall last night to
organise an Anti-Chinese League. Over 500 persons were present, and numbers were outside the building
unable to gain admission. The Mayor, by request, presided, and great enthusiasm prevailed. The proceedings were very orderly. The principal leading residents took part. The speeches were earnest, but temperate in tone. It was shown that this district is seriously endangered by the
presence of a large Chinese population, who are gradually acquiring the best
agricultural lands. Five resolutions and a manifesto of 18 clauses, prohibitory in
charter, were unanimously carried. At the close of the meeting a
great body of persons joined the league. A copy of the resolutions will be forwarded to the member for this
district for presentation to the Colonial Secretary. |
