Big New Timber Plants for Tumut, Oberon 6 February 1959 The Canberra Times |
A new large scale timber industry, with a total private investment of more than £1 million is to be developed at Tumut and Oberon. The Premier, Mr. Cahill, who announced this to-day, said the new plants would manufacture particle, or "chip" board, which is used in a wide variety of building purposes, or as solid core for veneers. He said the plants would use small-diameter logs derived from thinnings from the Forestry Commission's pine plantations. The National Sawmills Proprietary Limited mill at Gilmore already had on order overseas a modern plant to manufacture the board. The company is already operating, at Tumut, the most modern mill in the State. Another mill, Monterey Pine Proprietary Limited, is also operating at Tumut. |
