of Miss Catherine Carberry 19
May 1945 Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga) |
The sudden death occurred at her home
at Gobarralong on Monday last of Miss Catherine ('Kate') Carberry,
aged 71 years, says the Gundagai 'Independent.' A familiar figure in the life of
Gobarralong and a very popular personage was the late Miss Carberry. Over the past few years she had not
experienced the best of health, but her demise came as a great shock, not
only to her friends, but to her own family. Retiring early, she awakened about 10
p.m. and complained of not feeling well. Shortly after wards she collapsed and
died. The deceased was a member of a pioneering
family of the Gobarralong district. In her younger days she was a great
horsewoman. Before the first Gobarralong bridge
was build across the Murrumbidgee, Miss Carberry
was known to all settlers in that portion of the district, for it was she
that ran what could be termed a ferry service across the river. She rowed a big row boat, and was at
the beck and call of all who desired to cross the stream, whether the river
was in flood or not. A devout soul, and a true daughter of
her faith, the deceased tried to live her life according to her Christian
beliefs. She was generous and kind, and always
ready to help those who needed help. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mooney
(Wagga) and Miss B. Carberry (Gobarralong), and
three brothers. Messrs. Tom (Gobarralong), Jim (Nangus) and Arthur Carberry (Gobarralong). |
