Death

The death occurred suddenly, at
Tumut, of Mr. Frederick James Downing, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Downing, aged 71. He, went to, Victoria after his
schooling at Tumut, and joined, the 8th Light Horse on the outbreak of
the 1914-18 war. He was at the landing on Gallipoli,
where he suffered leg wounds. Afterwards he was in hospital
for months in Eng land, and it was thought his leg might have to be
amputated. He was in hospital in Melbourne for
some time on his return, and then was able to get about with the
aid of crutches and returned to Tumut. Finally, he regained complete use of
the leg. There are a brother, Matthew (Tumut)
and three sisters, Margaret (Mrs. J. Emery, Tumut), Lillian (Mrs. Welsh,
Orange), and Miss Mary Downing (Tumut). |
