Death of Mr. Henry Snowden

The death occurred at the Tumut District Hospital on Saturday last of Mr. Henry Snowden, aged 74 years, of Newtown, Tumut.

He had only been a patient in hospital for a week prior to his demise, which came very unexpectedly, as he was making excellent progress.

Deceased was a native of Lyndhurst, near Carcoar, N.S.W.

At the age of 14 years, he was apprenticed to Mr. J. B. Fitzgerald, a bridge contractor, and was employed on the construction of timber bridges at Cowra, Mudgee, Nyngan, Singleton and other places.

In 1892 he came to Tumut with Mr. Fitzgerald, and was engaged on the construction of Shelley's Bridge, at Tumut Plains.

In 1894 he married Miss Teresa Arentz and ever since has resided with his wife and family at New town, Tumut.

For the past fifty years he was engaged in the district, on the construction of roads and bridges, both in the shire council's employ and on his own account.

He was a valued member of the Tumut Shire Councils' road staff for approx. 48 years, retiring about 18 months ago.

His workmanship and skill, especially in the bridge building and culvert construction sphere was outstanding.

Until a couple of weeks ago he had always enjoyed remarkably good health. He was a strict tee-totaller and non-smoker.

The deceased is survived by his wife, one son, Henry, of Police Headquarters, Sydney, four daughters, Mrs E. J. Higgins (West Blowering) , Mrs D. Hawthorne (Chatswood), Mrs J. Paterson (Uralla) and Mrs. W. Walter (Roseville).

The funeral took place yesterday, interment taking place in the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery.

Rev. Broadfoot conducted the services at the Church and graveside, and Mr. C. Burt was in charge of funeral arrangements.
