Death
of Mr. Jacob Ballard 9

A briefly recorded in our last issue, the
death occurred at the Tumut and District Hospital on Tuesday last of Mr. Jacob Ballard, of Goobragandra,
at the age of 85 years. Deceased was born at Goulburn and was
the last surviving member of a family of six. He was a son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Ballard, of that city, and his mother died when he was a small boy. Later his father married again and moved
from Goulburn to Midway, Gocup, where he purchased
a property and where his family grew to manhood and womanhood. The late Mr. Ballard married Miss Louisa
Cribb, of Goobragandra,
where he purchased a property and where he resided for the rest of
his life. There was no issue to the union,
but they adopted two children - Mr. Fred. Tutty, who served in the 1914-18
war and now residing at Wee Jasper, and Miss Alice Buckley, who denied
all the pleasures of her youthful life to care for those who reared her.
Mrs. Ballard predeceased her husband
by about fifteen years. About twenty years ago the late Mr. Ballard
had an accident with a gun, his arm being shattered when the gun burst, to
such an extent that it had to be amputated at the elbow. The surviving step-brother and step sisters
are Thomas (Midway), Mary Anne (Mrs. Woods, Sydney), Lena (Mrs.
Patton, Lacmalac) and Margaret (Mrs. Tutty,
Gundagai). Brothers and sisters deceased are Samuel (Grahamstown), Abe
(Sydney), Isaac (Victoria), Hannah (Mrs. J. Whiting, Sharp's Creek,
Adelong), Sarah (Mrs. W. Buckley, Lacmalac). Step-brothers also deceased are
Charlotte (Mrs. Maidment, Wyalong), William (Gundagai)
and Edward (Echuca, Victoria).There are a large number of relatives residing
in the Tumut and Gundagai districts. The funeral took place on Thursday last,
the remains being interred in the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery.
Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside
and Mr. C. W. Burt had charge of the mortuary arrangements. The pall-bearers were Messrs. D. Cribb, A. Johnson, L. Patton, A. Ballard, John and
Arthur Buckley. |
