Water Needed Before Darl-Hay Scheme

In a letter to the Griffith sub-branch R.S.L.,
the Minister for Conservation, Mr. G. Weir, said it would not be advisable
to proceed with the Darl-Hay scheme until
additional water was available, either from a dam on the Tumut
River and increased storage at Burrinjuck, or by diversion from the
Snowy River. The Minister added that
investigations were at present being carried out for the construction of
a conserving dam on the Tumut River near Blowering.
He said that even if these
investigations should indicate that it would be practicable to construct
the dam, it would take four or five years at least to provide a storage. With a view to obtaining additional
land for the settlement of ex-servicemen, the sub-branch had written asking
that the Darl-Hay scheme should be proceeded
with. |
