Obituary - Mr. Arthur Ibbotson

Another old Tumut identity has passed on! On Wednesday last at 2.30 p.m. the death occurred at the Tumut District Hospital of Mr. George Arthur Ibbotson, of Macquarie-Street, Tumut, who had been admitted to the institution that morning. 

He had been in failing health for some years, but had been able to go about his usual daily routine right up until the morning of his death when he suffered a sudden heart at- tack at his home.

His death was a great shock to his family as the end came so suddenly.

The late Mr. Ibbotson, who was 79 years of age, was born at Tumut, being the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Ibbotson, of Tumut.   

In early manhood he followed station work and droving and later worked as a carrier for the late Mr. John Weeden in the latter's general store (now Weedens Pty. Ltd.), which position he held for twelve years.

Then he launched out in a carrying business with a horse-drawn waggon, principally to the mountain regions, and he followed this occupation until the advent of motor transport.

Selling his team of horses, he purchased a butcher's business in Russell-Street from the late Mr. Walter Russell and continued with this enterprise until his retirement.   

In 1896 the late Mr. Ibbotson married at Tumut Miss Sarah Mantell, who predeceased him 26 years ago. 

There is a family of five surviving: Elsie (Mrs. W. Patton, Tumut Plains), George (Bondi) Walter (Melbourne), Colin (Tumut) and Roy (Rosebery). The three surviving brothers are A. E. (Bert) Ibbotson (Katoomba), Roland Ibbotson (Tumut) and Herbert Ibbotson (Burwood).

There are also six grand children. Two brothers and one sister predeceased him. 

The funeral took place on Thursday last, leaving for the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery after a service at All Saints' Church conducted by Rev. S. Broadfoot.

Deceased was laid to rest beside his late wife.

Pall-bearers were Messrs. George, Walter, Colin and Roy Ibbotson (sons), Ray Ibbotson and Jack Ibbotson (nephews).
