The sudden and unexpected passing of
Mr. Frederick Charles Allen, on Monday evening last, at the Tumut District
Hospital, came as a shock to those near and dear to him, as well as to
his vast number of friends and acquaintances in the Riverina. Deceased was well known far and
wide for his genial and happy personality and ranked among the most
popular of men in the town and district where he was reared and
lived. About twenty years the late Mr. Allen
joined forces with the late Mr. Allen joined forces with the late "Friday”
Gillman, and eventually set out on his own account as a registered bookmaker.
In this capacity his won for
himself a host of clients and friends and became one of the best known
bookmakers in the Riverina. Of recent years deceased had to curtail
much of his previous activities owing to ill-health which was brought about
through work in the mines at Grahamstown. A patient sufferer, very few
people ever knew how much he went through as the result of the malady
contracted in the mines. Throughout all this illnesses he was nursed
and cared for by his sister, Mrs. Crameri, at Shepardstown, and his niece, Miss Crameri.
About five weeks ago deceased
contracted a severe cold which caused him to take to his bed.
However, in spite of the best of medical
attention and careful nursing at home he failed to rally. Being advised to enter hospital,
he was conveyed to the Tumut Hospital on Monday morning, but his
condition was so low that he passed away in that institution the same
evening about 5,30. The late Mr. Allen was the son of the
late James and Mary Allen, of Shepardstown, where
he was born fifty four years ago. The whole of his life was spent
practically in the district, where for a time he worked as drill
sharpener in the mines at Gibraltar. Later, for a short time; he worked on
the underground railway in Sydney. Always a keen sportsman, he was an ardent
supporter of the Adelong Jockey Club and assisted the club in all
its activities, as well as devoting much time to advancing sports and athletics
in the district. He is survived by his wife, Constance
Minnie Allen, of Elizabeth Bay, sisters: Mary (Grahamstown), Margaret (Mrs. Crameri, Shepardstown), Lena
(Mrs. T. Wall, Grahamstown), and one brother, Mathew (Sydney). Three brothers predeceased him viz. John,
William and Thomas. The funeral took place on Wednesday
morning from the R. C. Church, Adelong; and was very largely attended. Bookmakers were present from Wagga,
Cootamundra, Tumut and Gundagai to pay their last respects to one who
had won their goodwill and affection. The last, sad prayers were read at the
graveside by Rev. Fr. Collins. The pall-bearers were Nephews, W.
T. Wall, D. Wall, D. Elliott, C. Hill, B. Treacy,
L. Ormiston. The funeral arrangements were in the
hands of Messrs. Boston Bros. Numerous telegrams of condolence were
received and among the wreaths which came from all sections of the community
were noted the Southern Districts Bookmakers Association; Committee
Tumut Turf Club; Adelong Jockey Club; Adelong Football Club; Shepardstown school children and teachers. |
