The death of Mr. George Clout, of 'Rosemount,'
Brungle, which occurred at a private hospital, removes a man of
outstanding personality and character and a prominent figure in the Tumut
district. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Clout, his father being one of the pioneers of the district, and was born
at Rosemount in 1867. The public interests of the late Mr.
Clout were many and varied. Ever since the amalgamation of the
Tumut shire and municipal councils in 1928, until illness caused his
resignation a little over 12 months ago, he represented B riding on the
Tumut Shire Council. During his term of office his
general knowledge, coupled with an outspoken mind and an understanding
of the requirements of country residents, made him an ideal
councillor and advocate for his constituents. For twelve years he was also a
director of the Tumut Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd.. ill-health also necessitating his resignation from the board.
Dairying was his life-blood, and
therefore it was natural that in the welfare of this industry he should
take such a keen interest. Twenty years ago he was an
inspector of the Gundagai P.P. Board. Early in his agricultural career he
purchased 'Woodieigh.' Tomorroma
and then, when his father retired and came into Tumut to reside, he
purchased the old property, 'Rosemount,' from his father, where he took
up residence. He married Miss Alice Elizabeth Last,
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Last, of 'Ferndale' Tomorroma, who survives to mourn the loss of a
loving and devoted husband. There are three sons, Augustine
George (Gocup) Edwin Joseph (Tomorroma)
and Clarance William (Rosemount), and two daughters.
Doris (Mrs. Arch. French), of Brungle, and Kathleen (Mrs. Arch Stucky, of Tarrabandra,
together with two sisters, Miss Jane Clout, of Tumut, and Annie
(Mrs. Andrew Clee) of Bombowlee.
One brother, John, and one
sister, Caroline (Mrs. Alf. Sturt), predeceased
him. Interment took place in the
Catholic portion of the Tumut new cemetery, the Very Rev. Dean Sharkey
officiating at the graveside. The bearers were Messrs. Gus.
Edwin and Clarence Clout (sons), A. Stuckey and A. French (sons-in- law),
and Bevan Clee (nephew). |
