Obituary
- Mr. William John Masters 27
January 1948 The Tumut and Adelong Times |
The death occurred at the Tumut District
Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning last of Mr. William John
Masters, eldest son of Mrs. Annie Masters and the late William Masters,
of Tumut, at the age of 68 years. About ten years ago the subject
of this obituary developed a serious heart condition (angina pectoris) and
was compelled to relinquish his occupation, that of a painter. During the intervening years he has endured
much pain and suffering, particularly over the past eight or nine months when
the attacks became more severe. Following a serious seizure on3rd
January he was confined to bed at home till the following Wednesday,
when it was deemed advisable to have hospital treatment and he was conveyed
to the Tumut District Hospital. Every care and attention possible
was bestowed on him by his doctor and the Matron and nursing staff, but he
passed away, as stated, on January 20. The late Mr. Masters was a bachelor and
resided with his mother and sisters at the family home in Capper Street. Of a quiet disposition, he was held in very
high esteem by his friends, to whom he was always known as 'Burneigh'. Amongst his many nieces and nephews he
was a great favourite. He was a keen follower of the
turf and a member of the Tumut Club for many years; greatly interested
in fishing (being an expert angler for trout) and, in his earlier days, game
hunting and shooting. Deceased is survived by his mother (now
aged 96 years), six sisters, Flo, Maggie, Millie (Mrs. M. Cruise), of Tumut,
Ethel (Mrs. E. Herring, Randwick), Edith and Nellie (Mrs. Bradford, Batlow),
and two brothers, George and Rupert. One brother, Herbert, predeceased him
at a very early age many years ago. Unfortunately, his brother George, who is
at present in Lismore, could not reach home in time for the funeral. Following
a service conducted by Rev. Father Bartley (Cootamundra), who also officiated
at the graveside, the funeral left the Church of the Immaculate Coneption for the Catholic portion of the Tumut New
Cemetery, where interment took place on Wednesday morning last. Pall-bearers were six nephews of the deceased,
Messrs. Frank, Jack, Reg. and Pat. Cruise, Jack Masters and Neil Masters.
Messrs. W. W. Beavan
and Son had charge of the mortuary arrangements. Floral tributes were sent by the
