Private J. Ryan, V.C., Carried Swag

Melbourne, Saturday.-

A man who, after four years' swag carrying and hardship, arrived at Mildura on Thursday and produced papers to show that he was Private John Ryan. V.C., of the 55th Battalion, A.I.F. has been offered a position as commissionaire at a city office.

Ryan's latest walking stage was from Balranald (N.S.W.). The Mildura Council gave him temporary employment.

War records : show that the Victoria Cross was won by Private John Ryan for valor on the second day of the last great advance near Bullecourt. His cross was one of the last five won in the Great War.
