Sudden
Death of Mr. Herb. James 22
November 1949 The Tumut and Adelong Times |
The friends of Mr. Herb James, of Tumut,
were shocked to learn of his death which occurred suddenly late on
Sunday afternoon whilst on a fishing excursion to Bowler's Flat (Blowering). Deceased and Mr. Rub Masters had
motored to Bowler's Flat during the afternoon for a couple of hours fishing.
Mr. James complained of a pain in
his chest and said he would return to the car and wait for Mr. Masters.
The latter found him lying across
the track leading back to the car. Death was apparently due to heart
failure. The late Mr. James was born at Goulburn
and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse James, of that city. On completion of his apprenticeship to
the tailoring trade he came to Tumut over 50 years ago to work for
the late Mr. A. J. Jenkins, well-known tailor of this town. He remained with the business until
the death of Mr. William Jenkins who had carried on after his
father's demise. Mr. James then retired and dabbled
in the trade to a small ex-tent at his home in Capper Street. Deceased married Miss Ethel Dodd,
of Tumut, by whom he is survived. There were no children born to
the union. There are two brothers, William
(Manly) and George (Sydney) and one sister Lena (Mrs. Willis,
Haberfield), also surviving. The late Mr. James was a member of
the Tumut Town Band for over 50 years, occupying the position of drummer.
He was also a member of the
M.U.I.O.O.F. Of a quiet, retiring disposition
he was well liked by all who knew him. He was a keen fisherman. T he funeral leaves from All Saints'
Church of England at 2 p.m. today for the New Cemetery.
