Bowling Green Officially Opened For 1949-1950 Season 22
November 1949 The Tumut and Adelong Times |
The official opening of the Tumut
Rowling green for the 1949-50 season took place on
Sunday afternoon in fine weather. Visiting bowlers were present from Batlow,
Gundagai and Cootamundra and there were over fifty bowlers taking part
in the after noon's play. The official opening was performed by
Mr. Ralph Dunstan, President of the Tumut Bowling Club. The beautiful surroundings of the bowling
green are becoming enhanced as the years go by and no doubt the setting
ranks among the most picturesque in the State. After the serving of afternoon tea by
the ladies Mr. Dunstan extended a welcome to all the visiting bowlers at
the Club's opening day. Without their presence the opening day
would be a 'tame affair'. He was pleased to see two rinks
from Batlow, two from Gundagai and one from Cootamundra present. Apologies had been received from Wyalong
Club and from the President of the Southern Slopes Bowling Association,
Mr. Adamson, and from Mr. Walter King who was to have 'performed
the official opening ceremony but who had been unable to attend. Ralph hoped that the day's play would
result in the Batlow bowlers stirring themselves to greater efforts to
get their own green completed. On behalf of the visitors Mr. P. Sullivan,
President of the Gundagai Club, thanked the Tumut Club for its
cordial welcome. He congratulated the Club on the picturesque
surroundings of the green. They were always pleased to come to Tumut,
so much so that they felt Gundagai was really a part of Tumut. He wished the Club a
successful season. Mr. Herb Kinsey (Cootamundra), in
support thanked the ladies for the splendid repast provided. He had been visiting Tumut since
1934 and he always looked forward to the hospitality which was
always forthcoming from the Tumut bowlers and their wives. The latter were a great inspiration
to their husbands and they were made all the more
happier by the thought that their men folk participated in
such a happy and friendly game as bowls. The appreciation of the bowlers was
conveyed to the ladies by acclamation. Mr. Dunstan, in officially opening the
green for the 1949-50 season, hoped that the
bowlers would enjoy their visits to the Tumut green and that the
season would be a success Mrs. Dunstan then rolled the first Jack
and Mrs. Norman Beegling bowled the first bowl
for the new season. |
