Tumut Man Took Gaol For Failure to Destroy
Rabbits Attracts 1 April 1949 Cootamundra Herald |
Milton Hayden, of Tumut, who was
recently discharged from the Tumut lock-up after receiving a sentence
of 14 days rather than pay the £5 fine for failing to destroy rabbits on
his property, has drawn attention by the Sydney Press. Contacted by the 'Sunday Sun, Hayden
said:- My idea was to cause the public to enquire
what was happening elsewhere. I explained to the court that there were
few rabbits and no warrens on my own pocket handkerchief holding,
though some big properties were riddled with warrens. Everywhere I go strangers pat me on
the back and say the authorities will have to take action against the “big
fellas”. The 'Dally Telegraph' phoned the
Tumut Sergeant of Police seeking a further line on the story.
